Why biblu SHOULD exist?

Updated: Nov 3, 2022

One of my favorite quotes from Eric Ries, author of Lean Startup.

"The big question of our time is not Can it be built? but Should it be built?"

Following the path paved by Eric's question, I found several admirable answers.

I further found #purpose.

To answer Ries's question, "Should biblu be built?"

Of course!

Here's why it should be built, it should exist.

Why and what for?

biblu exists to...

1. Preserve the experience of touching and smelling a book.

We should preserve the experience of holding a book, turning its pages, smelling it, scribbling notes in margins, and gifting them with our warm handwritten notes.

We're entirely captive to the book's world and the author's voice when reading paper books. We're well protected from non-stop distractions by the other dozen apps in the background or interrupted by those two push notifications per minute. We give our eyes a chance to rest from all the light immitted by all the screens popping up under our noses.

We need to be more responsible towards the environment. Our survival depends on it. "Reduce, reuse, and recycle" is an excellent mantra for those who pledge to our survival. Therefore, lending, borrowing, and libraries should make a strong comeback. And this brings me to the following reason why biblu should exist.

2. Evolve the noble idea of great libraries.

I've always loved libraries.

The idea is magnificent and noble— Buildings stacked with books, reservoirs of our ideas, thoughts, and stories.

They have been around for nearly 3,000 years. Yet, while almost everything has changed and digitized (and now Metasized), actual physical libraries sometimes seem to have mostly stayed the same.

I ask myself the question: How could I evolve the idea of libraries while preserving the experience of touching and smelling a book?

And I found in biblu an answer: Together, we could combine all our home libraries and create the largest library of physical books in the world.

Can we do it, though?

Of course, we could!

Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods, authors of Survival of the Friendliest, say our specie's competitive advantage relies on our friendliness. Throughout history, collaborative communication led us to build great things and wonders. Cooperative communication is our primary means of survival.

If the world becomes better when like-minded book-loving people are connected, then we should connect them.

So...

3. Connect like-minded book-loving people.

Knowing that your manager shares your love of comic books instantly makes a HUGE difference in your relationship with your manager. Learning this simple fact could make you feel that your manager is more human, relaxed, cooler, compassionate, intelligent, or fun.

Knowing that your colleague shares your obsession with greek mythology books makes you want to have more conversations outside the office.

The same is true when knowing your neighbor likes to read philosophy books, like you. Your neighbor instantly becomes more visible than ever.

Just knowing that we share interests in specific book genres with strangers immediately creates respect, admiration, and amiability toward them. They become more approachable and pleasant. Our conversations become longer. And

surely, our relationships become more profound.

Isn't it lovely to respect others and earn others' respect? To admire and be admired? To accept and feel accepted? To reciprocate love when establishing connections?

Of course, it is.

So... Should biblu be built?

Absolutely! It is such a simple, positive way to connect neighbors and strengthen community based on sharing books. Brilliant for those who do not live within easy access to a public library, or who cannot afford to buy real books. Plus, the model can be so easily scaled to borrow and lend other things like kids' toys, etc. Such a great idea!
